The Irish tricolor consists of a green stripe at its hoist, representing the Gaelic tradition, and an orange stripe at its end, representing the followers of William of Orange. They are separated by a white stripe at the center, indicating peace, or truce between the two factions. The Irish flag was adopted by the Irish Republic in 1919 and is regarded by many nationalists as the national flag as the whole of Ireland.
